When Adam Disobeyed God

What really happened to Adam after he disobeyed the commandment God gave him in the Garden of Eden?

Our prayer --

Lord God, Our Father, we repent of our sins, and ask You to give us the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and revelation that You want for us now in Jesus' name, amen.

The Holy Scriptures say, "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden you may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. (Genesis 2:16-17)

Consider God's creation of man in the book of Genesis.

"And the Lord formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living (soul) being." (Genesis 2:7)

We can draw these conclusions:

The Lord created man from the dust of the ground. Therefore, the body of man is from the dust of the ground.

The Lord breathed into the nostrils of man the breath of life and man became a living soul.

The Apostle Paul writes to the Thessalonians, saying,

"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

So we know that God created Adam with a body, a soul, and a spirit.

Now, how was man's spirit created?

"Then God said, let Us make man in our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (Genesis 1:26-27)

Therefore, God created man in His image. The Holy Scriptures say that God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24) Since God is Spirit, man's spirit is in God's image.

When God breathed on Adam, the soul was

created when man's spirit - from God - was joined to man's earth-body. The breathe of life was spirit and the soul resulted from the

joining of the spirit and body.

It was to Adam, not to his wife, Eve, that God gave the command.    Do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:16-17) It was only when Adam ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, that mankind died. This means that the Spirit of God was taken away from his body. The Spirit of God enabled the spirit of Adam to walk and talk with God in the garden in the cool of the day. (Genesis 3:8) It also enabled the spirit of Adam to have an intimate relationship with God on a daily basis. The disobedience of Adam, not Eve, destroyed that intimate relationship with the Lord God of Hosts, and the spirit of Adam died. Apostle James put it this way: "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." (James 2:26)

After the fall of mankind, the Spirit of God was taken from man and that very day he died. Without the Spirit of God, Adam could no longer communicate with God or have an intimate relationship with Him. Therefore, Adam was cut off from God and died that day in spirit.

Let us look at 1 Thessalonians 5 :14-23

We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.

Rejoice always;

pray without ceasing;

 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Do not quench the Spirit;

do not despise prophetic utterances

But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;

abstain from every form of evil.

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

When God judged Adam, He hid the Garden of Eden, setting a

heavenly guard there. Yet He showed mercy and grace to mankind by promising the coming of the Messiah. (Genesis 3:15)

Despite the fallen, sinful condition of mankind, God did not totally abandon man. Although man was dead in his spirit, God gave mankind a chance to have relationship with Him. God gave freewill to man. He could choose to seek after God or after his own sinful desires. Sadly, the human race eventually became so corrupted that except for Noah and his family, the flood destroyed everyone else.

Let us consider:

Abel sought to please God. His brother Cain displeased God by killing Abel for revenge sake. (Genesis 4:1-8) All the "Heroes of Faith" mentioned in the 11th Chapter of Hebrews accomplished their righteous works by the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the New Testament, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. He was a just and devout man waiting for the Consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Christ. (Luke  2:25-26)

Before the day of Pentecost, God put his Spirit upon people in the Old and New Testament to accomplish His will.

God let His Spirit rest on King Saul. Yet the king disobeyed God because he feared the Children of Israel. Simeon was a better example when he obeyed by going to the temple and waited for the Consolation of Israel, which was the birth of the Son of God.

When God placed His Holy Spirit upon both men, each had a choice or a decision to make -- that is to obey or disobey Him. This vital decision is made in the soul - the conscious mind - of man or woman.

What man will decide is from his God-given free will. God did not create robots. He created man with a soul, where man's free will resides.

Here's The Good News.

Jesus Christ is the Messiah promised by God during Adam's judgment. The Holy Scriptures say, "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. And so it is written, "the first Adam became a living being, the last Adam became a life-giving spirit."

(1 Corinthians 15:22, 45)

Jesus said to his disciples, "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper that He may abide with you forever. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you."  (John 14:16, 26)

Finally, it was on the day of Pentecost that God restored His Holy Spirit to mankind.

(Acts 2:1-4)

Holy Spirit was God's gift to those who obeyed Jesus.

"Jesus said, the thief (Satan) does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy, I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

God has extended His mercy and grace to the whole world and He is not willing that any should perish. The book of Peter says, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (3 Peter 9)

God has blessed mankind with a second chance, if we believe what Jesus said in the 14th chapter of St. John and the 6th verse:

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." Jesus Christ is saying that if you believe that He died for your sins and was raised from the grave on the third day, that He is your Lord and Savior, then your reward will be Eternal Life.

All other belief-systems of the world focus on the search for God. Christianity does not focus on the search for God, but rather having an intimate relationship WITH God. It is not a religion.

After God reveals Himself to us, we have the choice to accept or reject Him. We have the choice to believe or not to believe Him. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (who became Israel), is the God of the Bible.

Religious people search for God.

Blood-washed, Spirit-filled Christians and

Messianic-Jewish believers

rejoice in their

relationship with God.

Ultimately, we are called to believe, trust, and honor God's Holy Word with our words and deeds. God does not make suggestions.

He gives commandments and calls us

to obey them without reservation or doubt.

The rewards for our obedience will result in

LIFE FOREVER.
